In late 2020, Crane Cams closed their doors. It was a sad day for 2.0 SOHC Neon owners, as this drastically reduced the number of camshafts available and totally killed off the big power cams for SOHC owners. Also that meant that no more Crane valve springs and titanium retainers for the SOHC were available.

We love the Neon, and we want to be able to continue to modify them, and support the aftermarket demand, so we decided to take action. We worked with a cam manufacturer to make us billet camshafts that have the exact same cam profiles as the Crane 10-20 grinds and we currently stock ALL grinds on our shelves. We also found and bought the last of all Crane SOHC valve springs and titanium retainers available. If you have a SOHC and think you'll ever want a camshaft, this could be your last opportunity to get one!

In the past when Crane was still in production, we offered camshafts and valve springs separately. However, due to the extremely low number of available springs we have left, we are ONLY offering them in packages. If we sold the springs separately, they would be hoarded and sold out in less than a week. Selling them as a package will get more people an opportunity to purchase a cam kit for their car. Once the valve springs are sold out, this would render the cams that REQUIRE springs useless. The Crane #10 profile does not need springs, it can be used with oem valve springs, however the #12-20 profiles recommend/ require need new valve springs. So, #10 is sold cam only, and the #12-20 profiles will be part of a package with valve springs. The Crane 18-20 profiles will come as a package with Crane springs, and Ferrea lash caps as they are required for use. The only add on option with this cam package, will be the discontinued Crane Titanium retainers. Once they are gone, the retainers will be removed from the listing. No other manufacturers titanium retainer will fit the crane valve springs. Be on the lookout in August 2021 for our MPX adjustable cam gear for the SOHC Neon!

This product page is a combined listing of the Crane camshaft profile grinds, as well as Comp Cams for the 2.0 SOHC. Explanation of the cams below.

  • Crane #10 - upgrade for stock cars that need a mild increase over stock camshaft. About a 5-6 HP gain. No change in engine idle sound or cam lope. No springs required.
  • Crane #12 - Excellent cam choice for automatic cars and mildly modified SOHC manual transmission cars. About a 10 HP change. Mild change in engine idle sound and cam lope. Valve springs required for camshaft
  • Comp 200 - More aggressive than the Crane #12, this cam will give excellent mid range power and good top end power. Great cam choice for a automatic or daily driven manual. Valve springs required for camshaft
  • Comp 400 - More aggressive than the Comp 400, this cam is more suited for manual transmission cars with lots of bolt on parts. Valve springs required for camshaft
  • Crane #14 - This is only for manual cars or automatic cars that can be made to shift at very high RPMs. This cam gives nearly a 15 HP change in power near redline, you must have intake, headers, exhaust and all other mods. This camshaft gives a noticeable lumpy cam lope. Valve springs required for camshaft
  • Crane #16 - Performance usage, drag race, good upper RPM HP, fr use with turbo, intercooler advised, high flowing cylinder head / intake / large exhaust advised, aftermarket PCM required, 12.0+ minimum compression ration required. Valve springs required for camshaft

Can you provide the stock cam specs for a 2005 SOHC Neon for comparison? Also, will the stock cam gear work or is an adjustable gear required?

    • Modern Performance

We dont have stock cam specs. We can tell you however, that a stock camshaft is about 20-30% more milder than a #10 grind camshaft.

Yes, you can use the stock cam gear with the Crane camshaft.
    • Tyler

Factory camshaft specs and a lot of aftermarket specs fan be found at 2gn.ORG the second gen neon forum

Will the #14 cam work on the stock head (besides the crane valve spring kit). How much hp would be gained using the #14 cam.
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

All of the cams we offer will work fine on a stock head, but you'd gain even more power if you had a head porting job done.

The only thing that is required, is to change the valve springs. You might be able to use the #10 with stock valve springs but the #12 and #14 cam definitely need upgraded valve springs.

I have a 2005 neon sxt an I want to upgrade my cam, but I want it to sound aggressive. What do y'all recommend.
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

You can install a cam and change the sound of the motor:
Crane #10 - no change in engine idle sound
Crane #12 - slight cam lope sound
Crane #14 - significant change in engine idle sound

But generally people install a cam to gain performance and not sound.

If you want to change the sound, most people just change the exhaust or cut off the rear muffler.

What grind do you recommend for an 2004 neon R/t.

    • Customer Service Rep

The magnum 2.0 high output engines have an aggressive cam to begin with, so if you want to make more power, its best to use the #14.

I have an 05 se neon looking to get more power out of it. Will a new camshaft make more power?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

Definitely. A camshaft, good intake, exhaust, and header will really improve acceleration and horsepower nicely.
  • Zack
How will this cam affect idle?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

The more aggressive the cam, the less smooth the idle will be. So, the #10, is very mild, like stock, #12 is still smooth but has a slight lope, and the #14 is more lopy, and idles fine, but its noticeable it doesn't have the factory camshaft.

I have a 95 sohc head shaved 10 thou. I just bought a #14 cam and new springs. Will there be any interference with valve to piston. Thanks
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

You should be fine. But whenever you are doing custom head work/cams, its best to use clay or some other putty on the piston and rotate the piston/cams through a few cycles to ensure you are fine with no piston to valve contact.

Would you recommend using your #14 cam on a 4 speed Automatic?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

We would not recommend the #14 for an automatic car as most automatics will change gears before reaching some of the peak horsepower range. The #12 cam is a better choice for automatic Neons.
  • Vic
will i need aftermarket computer, or tuner with the #14 grind camshaft??
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

Every camshaft made for the 95-05 Neon can be installed with a factory computer, however, the more aggressive the cam is (like this #14 cam) the more your car would benefit from a higher rev limit, and more aggressive fuel tuning.
  • Terrance
Doing a nitrous build which cam will give me the real aggressive lope and work will with nitrous
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

Any of the Crane cams offered will work with nitrous. The #12 does not have much of a lope, but is more aggressive sounding than stock. The #14 has a more noticeable lope.

I'm building a motor for my daily driver (97 sohc 5 speed 2 door) and want to know rather a #12 or #14 would be a better chose Im wanting to make the motor mostly Stock but still have power when i need it.
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

The #12 is a fantastic all around cam for street use. From what you are telling us it sounds like the #12 is best for you. The #14 has more of a cam lope at idle, and lower end power suffers compared to the #12. These camshafts just shift power bands around, and the higher the cam grind, the more the bottom end power will be lost, and suffer.

I have a 2002 RT I'm sure it has the 2.0 Magnum high output with custom intake and a few other like mods such as AC and power steering delete 5 speed manual of course 6500 RPM Redline as I'm going to do an overhaul soon can I just go with the number 14 and see a noticeable difference I also plan to throw a bottle and spray system I'm kind of looking for a little bit more performance and A Lope
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

If you have a 01-04 Neon RT or 01-02 Neon ACR (you can identify the magnum motor as it has a fuel injector cover that says high output, and the magnum motors will have a aluminum intake manifold. Yes, the Crane #14 is a excellent cam choice for the magnum motor and a nice upgrade power wise. You'll definitely have a cam lope as well.

I am building a 95-98 2.0 neon for. Circle track racing. It's going to run on 3/8 mile track. Witch cam would you suggest?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

There is way too much for us to cover here to give you an answer, but you should be able to determine which cam is best for you based on:
Track rules - can you change your cam, is it ok to have a engine with a strong lope? Can you change your intake and exhaust manifolds? Can you install higher compression pistons? The more questions you can answer with a yes, the more aggressive of a cam you can use. If you have to keep your car stock sounding, and cannot change intake or exhaust manifolds, then you need to keep a more milder cam.

If I wanted to run the #14 cam would I be okay running it with a portted throttle body and intake with a new exhaust/muffler delete
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

The more mods you have, the better the Crane #14 will work. You should have air intake, long tube race header, head porting would help as well, lighter crank pulley would help.
  • Eric
Are you guys going to get anymore of the #14 cams?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

As of late 2019, Crane has discontinued their Neon camshafts, and what we have left is in the pull down menu.

What valve springs do I need for street grind # 10?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

The #10 cams are a mild stock replacement, you can use your stock valve springs. For #12,14,16,18 etc higher grades of camshaft, you will need to use the Crane valve springs.

I have a .020 over 10.5:1 JE short block, long tube header, aftermarket pcm in a dirt track car... I run 3/8 mile and my rev limiter is at 7800rpms. I turn anywhere between 7500-7800 on any given night... which sohc crane cam would you recommend?
    1 Answer
    • Customer Service Rep

The #14 is by far the most popular 2.0 SOHC cam we offer. Its also the best choice for you, because the #16 requires 12.0:1 or higher compression and you are at 10.5:1.
